How to analyse a Video game from a historical, source-critical perspective: The HGP-Method

Four years ago, when we began to examine digital games from the perspective of the history of ideas, we entered uncharted territory in several respects, specifically in how and with which methods to approach digital games. Since the turn of the millennium, many analysis tools have been developed and tested in game studies, fueled above all by the supposed methodological dispute between narratologists and ludologist. And yet we are still far from being provided with the appropriate instruments for all possible scientific questions about games.
